Abandoned sulfur mines and rust-toned cliffs along the eastern coast of Milos
Thiorichia, also known as Paliorema, is an abandoned sulfur mining site on the eastern coast of Milos, in the Cyclades, reachable by boat tour along the shore. The shoreline holds old factories, an arched mining bridge, and rusted wagons set against rust-toned volcanic cliffs. The mines operated through the 1930s, closed in the mid-1950s, and saw limited activity until 1978.
The cliffs once held some of the richest sulfur deposits in the Cyclades, extracted from deep within the volcanic walls. Remains of old tunnels and loading platforms can still be seen along the shore, where small vessels once carried raw sulfur to trading posts across the Aegean. After mining ended, the landscape was left untouched, and the site now stands as a quiet industrial relic alongside mineral-rich stone that glows in afternoon light.
Today, Thiorichia draws travelers in search of something beyond the typical beach. A Navy Blue Boat Tour approaches the shoreline by sea, where the full scale of the ruins comes into view.

Everything you need to know about our boat tours to Thiorichia in Milos
Thiorichia is best reached by boat. Navy Blue offers Private Cruises with tailor-made itineraries, Semi-Private Cruises for small groups, and Multi-Island Cruises that include Thiorichia as a stop. Sea Transfers pass the coast en route to other Cyclades islands. The land route runs through a rocky track often impassable for standard cars.
A Private Cruise gives you full flexibility: choose your swim stops, spend extra time at the arched mining bridge, or combine Thiorichia with Kleftiko or Sarakiniko on a full-day route. Semi-Private Cruises visit Thiorichia on select itineraries and include Mediterranean meal boxes on board. Multi-Island Cruises weave Thiorichia into a Cyclades day that can continue to Kimolos, Poliegos, or beyond. Our crew confirms the route based on sea conditions before each departure.
The water at Thiorichia takes on a green-yellow tint near the shore because of the high sulfur and mineral content in the surrounding rocks and sand. The sea itself is clear, but the minerals leach into the shallows and refract the light differently from typical Cycladic bays.
Thiorichia, also known as Paliorema, sits on the eastern coast of Milos where centuries of volcanic activity deposited thick layers of sulfur into the cliffs and seabed. When sunlight passes through these mineral-rich sands, it creates the yellow-green glow that sets Thiorichia apart from the turquoise waters of Kleftiko or Sarakiniko. Further offshore, the water returns to the deep blue typical of the Aegean.
The Thiorichia sulfur mines operated at full capacity through the 1930s and closed in the mid-1950s, with limited activity continuing until 1978. Since then, the site has been left untouched and now stands as an open-air industrial museum on the eastern coast of Milos.
During their peak years, the mines were among the leading sulfur producers in the Cyclades. Small vessels carried raw sulfur from Paliorema Bay to trading posts across the Greek Islands. After operations ended, the old factories, loading platforms, and iron wagons were left exactly where the workers walked away. A small plaque near the entrance honors the local resistance fighters of 1944, who were based in the area during the German Occupation.
Yes, Thiorichia is an open-air site that visitors can walk through, but care is needed. Many of the wooden floors and roofs in the old factories are aged and dilapidated, and the ground is scattered with rusted metal and sharp rocks. Sturdy shoes are strongly recommended.
On a Navy Blue Private Cruise, you anchor near the site and can spend time exploring the industrial ruins between swims. The arched mining bridge, old dormitories, workshops, and the cliffside tunnels where workers once lived are all visible from the shore. Our crew shares background on the site and points out which paths to follow. For a smooth visit, bring a wide-angle lens, plenty of water, and shoes suited to uneven ground.
Thiorichia is the only coastal site in Milos where volcanic geology, industrial heritage, and swimming come together in one location. Unlike sandy beaches or whitewashed villages found elsewhere on the island, Thiorichia features abandoned sulfur mine buildings, rusted iron wagons, and an arched stone bridge set against a dramatic cliff backdrop. The yellow-green mineral shallows add a color palette found nowhere else along the Milos coastline.
Most visitors to Milos focus on Kleftiko, Sarakiniko, or Firopotamos. Thiorichia offers a quieter, rawer alternative where history and nature overlap without any commercial development. There are no sunbeds, bars, or facilities at the site, which preserves its untouched character. A boat tour from Milos is the most practical way to reach Thiorichia, and it is often combined with Kleftiko or Gerakas on south and round route itineraries.

We almost skipped Thiorichia because we'd never heard of it. The second we rounded the cape and saw the rust-red cliffs, I knew it would be the photo we remembered most from Milos. Thank you to the whole crew for the tip.

Travelling solo and wanted something different from the usual Milos beach day. Thiorichia gave me that. The old loading platforms and the silence of the bay made it one of the more unusual places I've visited in Greece.

My wife wanted a relaxed day. I wanted something unusual. Thiorichia was the compromise that worked perfectly, she napped on the sunbed, I explored the old factory ruins from the beach.

Bachelor party of eight and we wanted somewhere with a story, not just another beach. Thiorichia gave us that story. The guys are still talking about the old mining bridge months later.

I'd read that the land road to Thiorichia was rough, so we booked the boat instead. Smartest decision of the trip. Our captain explained the history of the mines while we swam in the cove.

My kids thought the rusted wagons on the beach were a pirate shipwreck. Spent the whole swim making up stories about the old miners. Easily the most fun stop of our Milos holiday.

We'd done the Kleftiko route the day before and wanted something less crowded. Thiorichia was empty apart from our yacht. The water near the shore glowed a yellow-green I hadn't seen anywhere else.

Late-season cruise and the Aegean was calm as glass. We anchored at Thiorichia and the crew shared old photos of the mines during lunch. A quiet, thoughtful way to end our Milos trip.

Our anniversary stop was Thiorichia and the crew set everything up beautifully. We had the cove to ourselves for nearly an hour while the sun moved across the cliffs. The dessert at the end was a lovely touch.

Booked this as a photography trip and Navy Blue handled every detail. The captain knew the exact hour when the afternoon light hits the sulfur walls. I walked away with shots I couldn't have planned.

Our captain rerouted us to Thiorichia when the winds changed, and honestly it saved the day. We ended up seeing a coastline no one in our group had heard of. Ten out of ten for local knowledge.

Spring cruise before peak season and Thiorichia was completely still. No wind, no crowds, just the sound of the water against the sulfur cliffs. Navy Blue made the whole morning feel effortless.
