The Carved Boat Houses of Northern Milos
Mandrakia is a small fishing village on Milos’s north coast, between Firopotamos and Sarakiniko. From the water, its circular harbor is lined with whitewashed boathouses and bright wooden doors, some just above the waterline. A white-and-blue church stands on the hill above.
The village takes its name from mantres, the local word for caves carved by sea and wind into the soft volcanic cliffs. In the late 1800s, fishermen closed them with heavy doors painted to match their boats, creating the syrmata. The name refers to hauling boats inside. The harbor also served as a refuge for fishing boats and a trading point with Sifnos and other western Cyclades islands.
Many of the boathouses are still used by local fishermen, with small boats moored outside. Navy Blue’s north-coast routes pass the mouth of the harbor, where the painted doors are visible from the water.

These shelters are called syrmata, from the Greek word for hauling a boat inside. By the late nineteenth century, Mandrakia had developed as a fishing refuge and a point of exchange with other western Cyclades islands, including Sifnos.
Mandrakia is best visited on a calm day, when a boat can pass the harbor comfortably and the details of the syrmata are clear from the water. Light changes through the day, so morning and afternoon visits offer different views of the painted doors and the church above the harbor.
June and September are generally quieter than July and August. The north coast is often more sheltered during south winds, but your captain should always plan the route around the conditions on the day. On a private cruise, you can request an afternoon pass along the coast for photography.
Mandrakia, Klima, and Firopotamos are Milos’s main syrmata villages. Klima has a long waterfront row of houses, while Firopotamos pairs boathouses with a swimming bay. Mandrakia is more compact, with rock-cut shelters around a circular inlet and a church above.
