About Crete
Crete closes the southern edge of the Aegean and belongs to its own region, not the Cyclades. A yacht leaving Milos crosses roughly 89 miles of the Cretan Sea to reach the north coast. Chania receives smaller vessels inside its Venetian harbor, under a lighthouse the Egyptians rebuilt in the 1830s. Knossos lies five kilometers south of Heraklion, first dug by Minos Kalokairinos in 1878 and taken up by Arthur Evans in 1900. UNESCO added the Minoan palace sites to its World Heritage List in July 2025. Samaria gorge runs 13 kilometers through a national park declared in 1962. The crossing from Milos ends where the Cyclades do.
